His Excellency
Governor Edw. Salomon
Madison, Wis.
Your Excellency:
In conformity with your order to Col. W. H. Jacobs that those recruiting officers of the 26th Rgt. who have been before in the U.S. Army and recently resigned their commissions should make application through you to the secretary of war for permission to recruit the service, I beg leave to make here by such application.
I resigned at Kitsville, Arkansas in conscience of serious ill health, caused by a poison I unhappily and accidently imbibed at Merdtown, Arkansas.
My application for furlough to recruit my health could not be completed with, therefore I was compelled to render my resignation.
Being entirely recovered I wish to reenter the service again and hope that my application will find a favorable reception by Your Excellency.
Most Respectfully Your Obedient Servant

Near Atlanta, Ga. July 23, 1864
His Excellency J.F. Lewis
Governor of Wisconsin
Sir:
In the fiercest battle of the campaign, crowned by the most decisive victory, which was fought within four miles of Atlanta the 20th rist., the 26th Wisconsin bore its part. Wholly unsupported on the left we got to the foot of a hill just as the enemy reached its brow which we coveted. They came down to within about 10 faces of us in front and also came around our left giving us an enfilading fire. It was the 33rd Miss. of Featherstone’s Brig. Lonning’s Div. Stuart’s (labe Polk’s) Corps. We drove them back, pursued them on their very heels and gained and held the top of the hill, leaving thirty four of the enemy’s dead among them Col. Drake 33 Miss. and perhaps double that number of severely wounded who could not get away, behind us, and cutting off some forty officers and men who were afterwards taken prisoner. We took the flag and six officer’s swords of the 33 Miss., have been obliged to send them to headquarters but I have made application to get them back and if I succeed will sent them to the state.
Capt.’s Robert Miller Co. C and J.P. Seeman Co. I both comdg. Co. B were killed. Capt. Shemmeger Comdg. Co. F highly wounded and St. Wollman seriously. Seven enlisted men were killed and thirty four wounded.
This army is invincible, holds Atlanta in its gripe, the capture of which is reduced to a question of days. As soon as we get it I will send a full account of the part taken by this regt. in the campaign.
Henry Rauth Co. C. is senior 1st Lieut. in the regiment and I recommend him for the captaincy of Co. C. made vacant by the death of Capt. Miller. 1st Lieut. Joseph Maschauer, Co. H, who is next in seniority I recommend for the vacancy in Co. I caused by the death of Capt. Seeman. He has commanded that company ever since his promotion in November last. The captaincy of Co. F is also vacant by the promotion of Major Sackner. According to seniority promotion is due to Lieuts. Juenger Co. A., Koener Co. K and Wollner Co. G in the order prescribed but as they are all absent wounded I recommend that this vacancy be left open for the present. 2nd Lieut. Charles Karsten Co. F, who was once promoted on my recommendation, did his full duty on this occasion and I recommend him for 1st Lieut. of Co. H. For the 1st Lieutenancy of Co. C. I recommend Sergeant Major Rudolph Klien.
I should be glad to recommend upon the principle of company formation, as it is preferred by you, but I cannot possibly make it harmonize with the good of the regiment. An exception is made in the case of 1st St. Adolph Hensel Co.B. who is now in fact the oldest 1st St. He was promoted from quartermaster sergt. for the sole purpose of acting as 2. Lieu. of the regt. and has only acted as such and never served as a soldier in line and would not accept a captaincy in the line.

I have the honor to forward to you an Extract from the Official Report of Col. Wood, Camd’t the Brig. of the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, July 20, 1864.
Where all behaved well it may be regarded as wondrous to call attention to individuals. Yet it seems to me that I cannot discharge my whole duty in this report without pointing out for a special commendation the conduct of the 26th Wis. V.I. and its brave and able commander. The position of this Regt. in the line was such, that the brunt of the attack on this Brigade fell upon it. The brave, skillful and determinate manner in which it met this attack, rolled back the onset and pressed forward in a counter charge and drove back the enemy, could not be excelled by the troops in this or any other army and is worthy of the highest commendation and praise. It is to be hoped that such conduct will be held up as an example for others and will meet is appropriate reward.

Adj. General Wisconsin
Dear Sir:
I have the honor to transmit to you supplement to the record of my regiment which I have sent you bringing it down to the 25th of August. I trust you have received it but I have not recd. any acknowledgement of receipt. In case you should not have received it and it is not already too late, please advise me by telegraph and I will send you a copy.
On the 25th of August we were still in front of Atlanta close upon the evening’s work but it was evident to all observers that a new move was being inaugurated. In this crowing effort of Genl. Sherman’s strategy we however, have but a very slender hold. At 8 o’clock at night we noiselessly withdrew from our trenches and marched in a westerly direction some two miles and there made a several hours halt. Then continued our march to Turners Ferry where a pontoon bridge was thrown across the river. Here we went at work at once to fortify a position to hold the ferry. On the 27th the evening made a demonstration against us with artillery and dismounted cavalry but made no attack on our works. Aug. 31, we detailed three officers and 70 men from the regiment to take part in a reconnaissance towards Atlanta. The party returned having found the enemy in the trenches so recently vacated by our army. Early in the morning of Sept. 2 we made a similar detail. A party of 600 men was sent out by our division and they were the first to enter the city of Atlanta. We met no opposition there. A small detachment of cavalry fled at their approach. In the evening of the same day we sent another detail to Atlanta and on the 4th the balance of the regiment came to the city and went into camp behind the old rebel works just south of the city. And there we remain to the present day. We have suffered no casualties during that time. It has been a period of rest to us, the whole distance march being perhaps 17 miles.
Since Aug. 25th we have received notice that 1st Lieut. Nicholas Vollimer, who was wounded in the head on 20th July at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, died of his wound at Nashville. August 21, 64, also that our absent enlisted men five (5) have died of wounds, three (3) of diseases and four (4) been transferred to Veterans Reserve Corps and one (1) discharged for physical disability.
Surgeon Francis Huebschurann and Capt. Edward Crul Co. K have resigned and Lieut. Leopold Melchnor Co. D has been dismissed the service by sentence of a General Court Marshall have been intoxicated when in charge of a company of skirmishers in the affair of the 19th of June. It was the only instance of misconduct of the part of any of my line officers during the campaign.

We have just concluded the arduous campaign which has brought us from avannah, Ga to Goldsboro, N.C. Our rejoicing over the success of the campaign is allayed with sorrow for our losses. ADJUTANT GENERALS OFFICE.

April 9th, 1895.
The Adjutant General,
Washington, D. C.
Sir:-
I have the honor to state that the records of this office show that Henry Urich enlisted in Co. “C” 26th Regt. Wis. Inf. Vols. on Aug. 14th, 1862, was wounded at Chancellorsville and Resaca and is accounted for on the muster-out roll of the company, as follows: “Wounded in battle at Resaca, Ga., May 15th, 1864, no discharge furnished.”
Having recently learned the address of this soldier and wishing to complete his military record upon our books we requested him to send us his discharge from the army. In response to this request he forwarded the enclosed document, which he states is the only discharge he ever received from the army; that he had paid very little or no attention to the following discrepancies, viz: You will observe that the discharge is for one Henry Verich, of Lieut. F. I. Stemple’s Company, 2nd Battalion, V. R. C., who enlisted on the 14th day of August, 1861. It appears that while this discharge is incorrect both in name and date of enlistment, and for the reason that there is nothing to show that this soldier was transferred from Co. “C” 26th Regt. Wis. Inf. Vols., Mr. Urich still claims that it was intended for him and that the error must be clerical.
In order that we may be enabled to complete his record and that Mr. Urich may have something to show for his military service, I most respectfully ask that, if upon investigation it is found that Mr. Urich was transferred to said Company in the V. R. C. and that he was discharged as per this certificate, and new and correct discharge be issued for him and sent to me for transmission to the soldier.
Very respectfully,
Charles King
Adjutant General.
