Lieutenant Colonel Hans Boebel

Lieutenant Hans Boebel [Bobel] was a printer from Milwaukee, before the war. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, January 18, 1863, from Captain of Company H. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Hans’ lower half of right femur was amputated. He was discharged on May 28, 1864, due to his disability because of his wounds. After the war Hans served as clerk in office of City Treasurer and was twice elected Milwaukee City Treasurer. Later he held a federal position as Deputy Revenue Collector, as well as officer in Milwaukee Turnverein. He was a noted dramatic actor in its stage productions and a prominent freethinker. He was a member of Robert Chivas Post No. 2, G.A.R. and a member of the Twenty-Sixth Regiment Association.
